Data Governance Implementation – What you wanted to ask but couldn’t

There were quite a few intriguing questions posed at both Jose and Arthur in the enlightening Q&A session after the webinar. Here is an excerpt:
Question: How long does it really take to get executive level support on understanding data governance as key and provide ad hoc resources to maintain?
Arthur: This is certainly a great question. Generally if seen in the context of consolidation efforts, executive sponsorship is pretty straightforward and direct and the process should realistically take around 3-6 months and the allocation of budgets should cross over to the next budgetary cycle.
What happens is that once you actually have executive sponsorship and acquire a committed in-house team to function as subject matter experts along with partnering with other agencies, the selection cycle that we see today can stand at 3 months or even between 6-9 months. Making the selection contractual and taking the entire process forward would thus be a 12 month cycle in reality.
Question: How do you rationalize descriptions when the legacy data is incomplete?
Arthur: This usually consists of a series of multiple steps involving both Integrity and Harmonize. The entire process stands at achieving some semblance of normalization and relies on methods like element mapping, transformation, translation and others. Encrypted descriptions are provided and categorized and then their values are separated from characteristic values and attributes. This process uses internal ID master references, legacy systems and other paths to improve data quality and enrichment of third party information.
Jose: This is a common scenario during acquisition where they give you 10, 000 materials that you need to Harmonize and analyze identifications with regard to purchases, inventory, stock and other factors over the last couple of years. Some legacy descriptions are quite poor but in case there is a manufacturer part number, the website of the manufacturer can be an information source or one can consider asking that particular business for additional information prior to resuming the harmonization procedure.
Question: How many dedicated personnel do you have handling the 1, 000 requests on a monthly basis?
Jose: All our CMDM analysts are based in the central location, namely West Palm Beach, Florida and two-three people are constantly processing the influx of requests. In 2014, we created more than 1, 000 materials per month but this is solely from our internal master data resources.
Question: My company acquired three systems that we are trying to maintain. Would be great if we receive some insights on triple system maintenance and governance?
Arthur: In case existing customers are procured, around 7-8 systems come into play. In most cases, the master system of records is replicated through Integrity. It is all about information syndication and is a straightforward process. Harmonization brings together all standardization systems under one roof and data governance requires you to pay careful attention to the optional vocabularies that you also inherit. Integrity takes care of legacy words and other cultural facets and similarities of individual systems. This gives you enhanced flexibility in data governance and minimizes change management for your organization.
