Improved data visibility during ERP – 1

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) spans across the different operating functions of an enterprise and its focus is to help the enterprise make the right business decisions. A critical factor in this regard is getting clear visibility into the business and all data associated with it, both past and present.

When organizations move from one ERP to another on account of consolidation, or move from their legacy based systems to an ERP (full lifecycle implementation), they are faced with the challenge of managing legacy data. This data represents years, if not decades, of irreplaceable sales, customer, employee, business partner, and other type of mission-critical information.

It is important to manage all this data carefully so that it gets to work as soon as the ERP is up and running. A real configuration of an ERP system can only happen when there is real data in the system. Data loading and data conversion is not a project that can be done after everything else is ready. In fact, extracting and cleansing the data from the existing system can be the single largest task in the project.

While companies will spend millions to renovate enterprise applications through composite applications and service-oriented architectures, without the most complete, accurate, and up-to-date visibility into the information available, these investments will not enable the best business decisions and fail to deliver maximum business value.

In the coming weeks, we’ll be discussing the impact of a lack of data visibility and how master data management can help in improving data visibility during an ERP project.
